Who is Gio?
Born in November 1973, I'm originally from the sunny Dutch Latin-Caribbean islands of Aruba & Curacao. As most Dutch Latin-Caribbean islanders, we grow up studying the local language Papiamento (a combination the native South American Indigenous language mixed with Portuguese, who first discovered the islands), Spanish, Dutch, English, French and German, as we still belong to the Kingdom of The Netherlands. Like most Dutch-Caribbean students, I left the Caribbean, all my families and friends behind at the age of 21 to do further studies in the Netherlands. I lived in the City of Lights (Philips Light Bulbs) Eindhoven, where I studied and worked for more than 10 years next to the PSV Football Club stadium. I have an academic degree in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. I studied and worked as well as a chemist analyst in labs and later as a multimedia and industrial graphic designer for a French design company (after graduating from the Philips Design Academy).
The high rate of obesity in the UK inspired me in 2005 to pursue my passion for Health and Fitness and took the decision to leave the Netherlands and start a new career once again. I joined a group of 15 ex army soldiers and Royal Marines coming back to Britain to be retrained in order to reintegrate in the civil society, as the only non British, self funded Dutch applicant. We were subjected to a very private, isolated and intense, but effective and efficient high standard of training in nutrition, human anatomy, physiology, psychology, biomechanics, exercise programme design and periodisation for muscular endurance, hypertrophy, bodybuilding, agility, speed, coordination, balance, mobility, strength and powerlifting from the American Premier Training International at Bath University in England. After finishing this gruelling training experience, I qualified in 2008 and have been building tens of thousands of hours of experience ever since.
Today there are just a few of us left in the UK, with a successfully qualified degree as independent Premier Training International Personal Trainers and Physio Sports Massage Therapists with a specific specialist training in nutrition, human anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics. In 2008 I started my practice in the beautiful mediaeval town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire and expanded my business in 2015 to a more holistic approach. As a sole trader I decided to open an entire fully equipped Personal Trainer’s gym, Giocentric Fitness Hub. Here I was able to share my knowledge and dedicate my time to train 11 apprentices to become qualified independent personal trainers. We developed classes, hosted several independent personal trainers, managed members, tenants like the tattoo artists, martial arts, and several therapists under the same umbrella. As a sole trader, after almost 8 years and after recovering from COVID, I took the big decision to sell the business and solely focus on my patient’s treatments moving forward.
My Continuing Professional Development never stops.

What's the secret of your fitness training method Gio?
No secret, mainly hours of research and study to basically understand and comprehend the structure of skeletal muscle, the anatomical and physiological features of the musculoskeletal system and its biomechanics. Combined with years of practice, training and experience.
My personal exercise workout programme method generally consists of: Controlled Time Under Tension movements, whilst maintaining an anatomic range of motion at all times. Focus, concentration, patience, mind-muscle connection and following my breathing frequency pace, whilst enjoying the journey with no rush. A combination of periodic progressive overload from sarcoplasmic hypertrophy to myofibril hypertrophy and back, following the seasons of the year.
Spring (March, April, May) Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy: Focusing on pumping a maximum volume of oxygenated blood into the muscle fibres at full range of motion and squeezing that very last extra possible drop into an almost exploding muscle mass volume, maintaining controlled time under tension. Isolation works first then the compound exercises. Summer (June, July, August) Myofibril Hypertrophy: Focusing on increasing the total numbers of contractile myofibrils. Stimulating muscle growth and increasing muscle strength. Ascending pyramid set method. Supersetting the agonist with the antagonist. Applying Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Autumn (September, October, November) Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy: High repetition volume training at full range of motion. Slow-paced and controlled time under tension movements. Winter (December, January, February): KAATSU Training (muscular endurance) Proprioceptive exercises and applying PNF Maintaining an anatomic range of motion at all times
Allowing the muscles fibres to rest, recover, build, stretch, strengthen, expand, multiply and new myofibrils to grow in numbers, volume and length, whilst remaining consistent and being patient throughout the year.
