BIO
I am Don Ricardo, a Sydney-based ceramic artist.
After 30 years of every type of art I could get my hands on, I shifted to ceramics, taking my frugal, use what-you-have love of wabi-sabi and imperfection with me.
My design process is entirely intuitive. I shape every part of my work by hand, using creative emotion, sticks, stones and other primitive tools to guide me.
I never know what's going to happen when I start a new piece. I allow the piece to happen and ‘errors’ are usually new-found adventures.
I don’t use an electric wheel or any complex tools, and what tools I do use, I have fashioned myself from reclaimed materials.
My design process is derived from traditional methods of crafting ceramics. Pinching, coiling, and paddle and anvil. I also love carving in the Japanese-style of kurinuki.
I create intimate artworks that are imperfect and expressive.
