A cross-cutting focus of her films is on the lives of those who are connected by fate yet straddle two cultures. A characteristic feature of her films is her ability to show the viewer how different cultures coexist in one’s fate and soul against the background of an era. Mariya Gershteyn was born and raised in the city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod). She has lived with her family in Boston since 1990 and has been engaged with documentary films. Films by Mariya Gershteyn have received numerous awards and nominations from American and Russian documentary film festivals in New York, Moscow, Boston and Philadelphia. They have been played in the USA, Russia, Israel, Canada, Germany, and countries of the former Soviet Union.
